LAWN
BOWLING
Nomad was the first to introduce lawn bowling into the Philippines. It is now recognized by London-based World Bowls, Ltd., the international association and controller of the sport, as well a member of the Philippine Lawn Bowling Association (PLBA) which is recognized by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission.
In the past, Nomad's have hosted clubs from Hong Kong, Calcutta and Australia in social challenges. The section also hosts Philippine clubs, Hidden Vale, from Angeles City and Coconut Grove from La Union in allocated National title championships, as well as visiting them for both National Titles and social games.
Two of Nomad's members have achieved international success in being selected to play for the Philippine National Team. Elenita Atkins played in the 2nd Asian Bowling Tournament, in Angeles City and has been selected to play in the 3rd Asian Bowling Tournament to be held this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is also the current National Ladies Singles Champion and will go to Australia later this year to compete in the Champions of Champions.
The current section captain, Brent Chamberlain, has represented the Philippines a number of times in Hong Kong and was invited to play here in the exclusive Invitational Championships, competing against the world's best bowlers. He also was part of the Philippine National team in the 2nd Asian Bowling Tournament in Angeles City.
Unless there is a competition, social play is on Friday and Saturday afternoons, generally from 2:30 p.m. Beginners and those who would like to learn the sport have the opportunity to attend the free training lessons given from 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday nights, weather permitting. Instruction is given by Ellen Atkins. All that is needed is comfortable clothing and flat-bottomed shoes. Lawn bowls are freely available.
All games are of mixed sexes, including club championships. Every year a competition is held to find the club champions in singles, doubles, triples and fours. A summer league is also operated for social bowls days. Bowlers in this event are given a handicap in order to give everybody an equal chance.
Other competitions organized throughout the year are the Mini-World Cup, where members play for the country of their birth, Captain's Birthday Cup, Festo Cup, Tri-Club Triples and challenge competitions against other organizations and clubs such as Manila Club, Soccer Section, St. George Society, etc.
As Filipinos appear to have a natural talent for the sport, the Bowls Section is keen to encourage both men and women to take up the sport. It is a sport that is lifelong, players being from 12 years to 80, yet it is one sport that currently, it is within the realms of possibility for any Filipino to quickly attain international standard.
If you are interested, either just show up Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. for free lessons, or turn up any Saturday or Sunday afternoon, introduce yourself and be put on a team
