BIRTH OF A NEW RUGBY TEAM IN THE PHILIPPINES
CEBU CITY RFC

A report on the first game of rugby in Cebu!!

At last, myself, Damien Alinson and Rogier Boks managed to get our balls out at the weekend and the result was a good one.

We somehow accumulated 14 campaigners for the first touch rugby session of Cebu City RFC (see attached Club Crest). The game took on a life of its own and is obviously the talk of the town. The fittest man on the pitch Rob "Iron man" Greville pulled a hamstring and was our first recorded injury (get well soon Rob) but his countryman Kiwi Andrew Sinclair ran in the first try in CCRFC history. AFL representative Drew McNiven showed sterling form and pace and South African Ross McCarthy spent most of the game in mid-air, diving is obviously his forte as he dived for touches and as soon as he was within fifteen yards of the line... read more
RUGBY SECTION

In spite of there being very little local competition, the Rugby Section is extremely well-supported and active.

Usually, with only a few days notice, it can raise a highly competitive team to cater to requests of visiting navel ships for a game. Occasionally, a club from the region will select Manila for their annual tour, allowing Nomad's to show what we are made of.

Just once a year, however, the Rugby Section are the Nomad's, and this is with the staging of the annual International Rugby Ten-a-Side competition just one week before Hong Kong stage their internationally famous sevens.

This competition has grown in both size and stature every year since its inception. This year's event witnessed twenty-six teams, some traveling from as far a field as England, Germany and Australia. Others had come from Africa and the Pacific Islands, as well as countries within the region. Altogether, over four hundred players took to the field. Many major companies provided hospitality tents where they entertained their clients with food and drinks while witnessing the spectacle.

Except when seriously training for this event of our annual overseas tour, the rugby section enjoy Saturday afternoons playing touch rugby, working up a thirst for the social gathering after. Everybody is welcome to participate in this non-bodily contact version of the sport. Just turn up at 4:00 p.m.

To put more excitement into our touch rugby games, currently teams are being formed to play in a Wednesday evening league.

The sport of rugby is slowly being adopted not by just international schools in Manila, but even MAAPS, the merchant marine school in Bataan. Rugby is growing in the Philippines.

To contact the Rugby Section, either turn up Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. or contact the Captain:
